Its been a while since I last updated this blog. A very long while… unfortunately that predicament is set to continue as I reassess priorities in my life. With so many unexpected things occurring right now (both good and bad) , I have made the decision to focus on ME for the time being.

But don't worry peeps, I'm still freaky for Diesel as ever, that will never change .

Less than 24 hours to go till I’ll be flying of to the US of A!

I still cant believe that I will finally be going there, after so long applying for the month-long course since January. Getting excited now visit all the places that I have seen only in print, tv and movies: the nation’s capital and the Big Apple. With my shiny new camera on tow, I Intend to snap all of the interesting where’s where and share it (just so to make you green with envy, hehe). Of course, what is a trip without a little shopping! I don't have a wish list per se, but I am eyeing a few uniquely American brands to bring back home . And for certain, ill be sure to make a pilgrimage to the Diesel mecca that is the Diesel Planet Flagship store @ 5th Avenue, New York. Land of the stupid, home of the brave… here I come!

My new shiny toy…

With my Washington DC / New York trip just three weeks from now, I figured its high time to replace my old crummy digital camera for a new one. Back then in 2004, my 4MP Canon IXUS served me well, but technology being what it is has evolved so fast, bringing higher imaging quality and more consumer-ready features, rendering it literally obsolete… Hence, now is the time, like Beyoncé always says: lemme lemme upgrade u!

I did only some cursory research on what type of camera that would suit my needs and budget. I have no designs to be a professional or photographer enthusiast, so the DSLR types would just be too bulky and screams of ‘tourist’. So I settled for the next best thing…

Presenting my newest shiny toy; the OLYMPUS XZ-1

Winner of the TIPA awards 2011 for the Best Expert Compact Camera and the reddot design award 2011, this ‘semi-pro’ premium compact digital camera offers the right balance of performance and portability. Do not be fooled by its 10 mega pixels image density, for image quality does not depend on bits alone. More importantly is the ability to satisfactorily shoot pictures in low light conditions such as indoors or night time. And this is where the XZ-1 truly shines, by offering an ultra-bright 28-112mm equivalent f/1.8-2.5 aperture range as well as 4X Optical zoom lens courtesy of its heritage Zuiko range lenses which used in all high-end Olympus cameras. Also, the images are made crisp thanks to its larger than average 1/1.63 inch CCD imager with sensor-shift image stabilisation. Equally coveted features are its two control dials (including an S90-style dial around the lens) for manual fine-tuning, the generous 3” brilliant OLED screen and HD recording capabilities. The camera normally retails for RM1,799… but thanks to the PIKOM Digital Lifestyle Expo held last weekend, I managed to obtain the gadget at RM300 less (i.e. at my maximum intended budget) plus loads of accessories and freebies .

The proof, of course, is in the pudding. So to test out the camera’s capabilities, I snapped this night-time picture of the majestic Stadium Nasional just outside my window… without the use of flash! (Pretty impressive eh)

Naturally my kitty Stokin’ also did not want to miss out on all the fun. And I am more than happy to make her my ANTM model, hehe… (btw, do you think she is preggers or just simply getting fat? )

Overall, I am quite satisfied by this camera and felt that I have made the right purchase. Cant wait to learn all of the features, especially the basics of apertures and shutter speed. Now I am ready to go snap happy when strolling down the White House or Time Square (and Zurich too!)

Diesel Black Gold's Resort collection felt lighter and more accessible than Fall and Spring, which were, dare we say, a touch too rock 'n' roll for even Diesel's flashy customer. This season was about feel-good prints, with seemly doses of leather and denim (a fabric surprisingly absent on recent runways) mixed in. Designer Sophia Kokosalaki showed a psychedelic, "mineral-inspired" pattern on parachute silk, which she whipped into various blouses, and a sporty jacket that was very Members Only.

On another vibrant note, there was a series of color-blocked knit looks that had Tetris-like charm. Leather came into play on a dress bodice that could be detached from its jersey skirt. And as far as denim goes, we'd skip over the poncho jacket but go for the boyfriend jeans that had just the right amount of slouch and a slight pink tint. While you could certainly find similar ones for less, there's no way they'll have been washed, treated, blasted, beaten, and painted like this pair.

Diesel Loverdose

Diesel spices up its perfume line with the new edgy edition named Loverdose in a game of words that be interpreted as "Lover Dose" or "Love Overdose”. The fragrance is announced as a beautiful but deadly weapon of seduction, made to ignite passions like never before.

Diesel Loverdose allegedly possesses molecules that stimulate hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for attraction and lust.

The very composition is floral – spicy, opening with star anise and mandarin. Sambac jasmine, licorice and gardenia petals form the core of the composition, placed on an oriental base of amber, vanilla and woody notes.

The bottle is symbolically designed to resemble a heart – shaped diamond pierced by an arrow, colored in intense shades of purple. The face of the fragrance is a young model Ashley Smith. Diesel Loverdose is available as 35, 50 and 75 ml Eau de Parfum.

Only the Brave: Captain America

Diesel Only The Brave has often been advertised as a ‘hero’ fragrance and now Diesel are taking that image to the next level by collaborating with Marvel on their newest limited edition: Diesel Only The Brave Captain America. For a limited time only Diesel Only The Brave will be available in a special Captain America flacon, decorated with the icon from Captain America’s shield and patriotic metallic blue.

The clenched fist bottle design is perfectly suited to Captain America’s muscled superhero image and is sure to become a collector’s item. This limited edition will be available from July 2011, just in time for the release of the new Captain America movie – Captain America: The First Avenger.

Like the original Only the Brave and the red Iron Man Limited Edition, the juice itself is exactly the same so don’t expect anything new there – this is more of a collector’s item, available as a 75ml eau dea toilette later this year.

Malaysian soul diva Ning Baizura unleashes her 8th full length solo Malay album DEWA after a wait that seams almost an eternity. In a span of seven years since her last Malay opus ‘Erti Pertemuan’, significant changes occurred in the chanteuses life. On a personal level, she has found and married the love of her life while professionally, she broke free from her previous management and pursued to chart her own career path independently.

The Malaysian music scene has also evolved tremendously during that time span as well. The rise of indie bands and talented singer-songwriters had invigorated the flagging local industry, bringing much needed freshness and excitement. To remain relevant, long established performers like Ning did not simply rest on their laurels and stick to what is known and familiar. Instead, like she always does, continued to reinvent and adapt to the changing status quo. As such, in her latest offering, she took considerable risks by changing her sound to feature edgier production and the use more of her lower vocal register in lieu of her signature soprano. Yet she did so with such confidence and panache that the set is destined to become a credible contender for best album come the end-year accolades.

As with her English release ‘EastToWest’, Ning expanded her love for electronic and dance music in the new album, while at the same time elevating her forte of pop, R&B and soul to the next level. In hindsight, perhaps it is indeed fitting that her special collaboration with Jac and Shila on ‘3Suara’ released early in the year offers vestiges of her ‘old’ sound as a final reminder for fans, acting as a prelude prior to unleashing her latest transformation.

DEWA, which means ‘light’ in Sanskrit is truly a reflection of Ning’s present stage in her career, love and life. While producer extraordinaire Audi Mok very much created a sonically forward landscape for the new, self-funded album, it is also as much a retrospective of some sorts: Ad Samad and Nurfatimah seems to have the uncanny ability to tap into the diva’s psyche and penned highly intimate lyrics that offers insights and glimpses of what defines her as an artiste, a wife and a woman. Also, there is a deep sense of spirituality seeping throughout the album, most apparent in the slower numbers.

Perhaps no other song defines the new Ning sound more effectively than the lead single, MAMA PAPA, a miasma of heavy bass beats and edgy synths designed to complement her digitized delivery about the ups and downs of marital relations. An infectious chorus and clever wordplay by Ad Samad made quite the impact on local airwaves. The groove continues with the second single, the blistering club banger RAKSASA. Here, Ning showers unbridled adulation to her love and praises his confidence and larger than life persona. However, not one to mistake that confidence with cockiness, she cheekily reminds her man not to get ahead of himself: Awas langkahmu, jangan terpijak orang berjiwa kecil. Meanwhile, the edgy PROPAGANDA, with lyrics written by Ning herself is addressed specifically to all the duplicitous individuals throughout her career who abused her trust by offering sweet lies and empty promises. The ‘angry’ vocal delivery, lashing almost, should serve as a stern warning to all who dare take advantage of her again.

The three up-tempo tracks are counterpointed with a curated selection of ballads. An interesting side note here are the tracks SAMPAI and BILA, which are basically two sides of the same song. Audi Mok produced both versions in two interesting yet distinctive directions, while Ning’s expertly reinterprets her vocal delivery accordingly, revealing the subtle nuances of Nurfatimah’s verses about regret, acceptance and moving on. On SAMPAI, Audi created a futuristic and almost militaristic soundscape, with the diva’s singing serving as a rallying call and personal anthem to women in particular. But if the first version finds Ning on the offensive, the latter finds her on the defensive. On BILA, the version ultimately selected as the third single, the production is contrastingly paired down to a rock ballad vibe, with the singing warmer, more emotive and vulnerable yet belies an unwavering strength: Sampai bila harus ku sabar? Sampai bila harus ku dengar perbalahan dua jiwa? Pergelutan hati perasaan.

Perhaps the most sophisticated and accomplished track in the whole album is the ethereal and utterly sublime slow burning number PENCARIAN. Featuring a lush and sweeping string arrangement, Ning’s vocals are a master class in understated elegance: starting off in her low, husky tones and eventually soaring high towards the climactic end. Delivering some of the most intimate lyrics on the set, here we find her in a position of a wizened sage, one that after having amassed a lifetime of experiences can she dispense the wisdom that the only never-ending journey and conquest in life is to find true love.

As mentioned earlier, there is a spiritualistic vein that runs deep in the album. And no other song enunciates that sentiment more beautifully than the inspiring and optimistic ballad ALHAMDULILLAH, easily the beating heart of the entire set list. Set against a piano accompaniment and gradually building in instrumentation, Ning’s vocals are clear and soulful and features some off her best R&B vocal runs to date (you know it when you hear it). The track is indeed a joy to listen to and is sure to uplift the mind and senses. The album bookends with AKU BUKAN DEWA, another autobiographical number with a strong declarative message that now is time to be herself having nothing left to prove and that, like everyone else, is only human and not without flaws.

Clocking at less than 30 minutes, DEWA succinctly yet clearly reflects Ning’s artistic vision and current musical direction. This highly listenable and accomplished album should sustain her legion of fans and even entice new ones into the fold for years to come.

EXCLUSIVE: MyFDB Fuels Up With Diesel’s Stefano Rosso

Stopping for lunch at the Chateau Marmont wearing a grey sweatshirt with a striking red Diesel Lips sticker on it, you’d never pin the soft-spoken Stefano Rosso as Diesel‘s Head of Strategic Brand Alliance. An FIT graduate, who started his fashion career working with ZooYork and Ecko in 2005, he then returned to his home country of Italy to join the family business. Now in 2011, Stefano, son of Diesel founder Renzo Rosso, is continuing to push the global brand’s influence further. MyFDB joined him at the Chateau to learn more about his position and what’s next for Diesel.

As the Head of Strategic Brand Alliances for Diesel, what exactly does your position entail?
Every time I talk to people about my job, they always ask me, “So exactly what do you do?” It’s kind of simple. I take care of all the collaborations with the company and with other parties. It could be brands, it could be artists or musicians, so we can create new collaborations with the brands. Collaborations that are not technically licenses, they tend to be short term and have an objective that is totally different…We want to keep and add even more coolness to our brand. Meanwhile, technically licenses are just a brand extension to gain extra revenue from the exploitation of your brand. This is what I don’t like to do.

We loved your collaboration with Uffie! Can you reveal any artists or collaborations that Diesel has in the works?
There is something that we are doing right now but it’s at the first stage of development which we will develop into something bigger. We are doing a collaboration with Ducati Motorbikes…so we are now sponsors of the Ducati motor-racing team with the two pilots Nicky Hayden, who is American and Valentino Rossi, who is Italian. It is only the first step of a bigger collaboration, as we want to put the two brands together to do something even more interesting and more exciting.

With Diesel being a well known global brand, how would you describe Diesel’s diverse style influence across the globe?
It’s very interesting…The opportunity [that comes with] being a global brand is that you’re able to deliver one message to everybody, they all get the same message. So, of course this has its challenges as you find yourself limiting your tone of voice or being misunderstood by different cultures. But as a matter of fact, if you really want to leave a mark or a sign, you have to be very consistent with what you say and how you say it. So that’s why we decided as a brand to have only one global collection for the entire world and one global advertising campaign with one product and one tone of voice for everybody. It’s either you like it and you’re into it and then you really stand for something strong…or you like something else.

Since you’re town for the WWD Denim Forum, what denim trends can we expect to see this fall?
This is a very technical question. In the past year and a half, I think we have really invested a lot of time in new treatments. Especially, in treatment techniques that will allow your 5 pocket to look even better and different every single day. We have one patent technique that we are using and [it will] actually be in store this year for the first time. It is called “turbo dying” and it’s a special technique in which the more you wear your 5 pocket, the more it gets used, but it takes half of the time to get the end result of having a vintage denim [look] than a regular 5 pocket. This is because we apply a special treatment that will age your denim in a very fast way. After 60 days you can have a 5 pocket that looks maybe 3 years old.

Do you have any other exciting plans while your in Los Angeles?
You know it’s very strange, because LA is a glamourous city…but I actually came for a very private reason. I came for my sister’s graduation from college, so it was a family moment. I probably will spend more time with my family in these four days than in the past two years.

Lastly, What advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
Do everyday what you really really really love and if you think something is good, its nice, you believe in it; just do it. Don’t ever go to compromise because nowadays if you compromise, you’re just doing something that somebody else is already doing. So you’re never going to win… The only way you are going to win, is if you have a strong idea and go all the way through with it.

Welcome to the Mother ship

After months of planning, waiting and damn right fantasising, I finally fulfilled one of my longstanding dreams of a return visit to jolly England, and set foot to the continent across the channel for the first time. On 31 March – 8 April, I and three other of my best mates went on holiday to London, Paris and Amsterdam. Fun would be an understatement... it was downright a joie de vivre voyage de la fantastique!

One of my main missions there, apart from enjoying the sights, sounds and smells, the cuisine, culture and club scene, is making a pilgrimage to Diesel stores in all three cities: Dieselfreak is finally home, baby. Talk about variety, I managed to set foot in both flagships in London, a shop-in-shop in Paris and a major downtown store in Amsterdam... and a bought several goodies along the way, of course ;p. This entry focuses specifically on my London escapades.

A good month ago, my little household welcomed two new additions: a pair of feisty and adorable kittens. These munchkins were from a much larger family, where the owner decided it cannot cope to take care of so many new litter. Still unnamed, they prance around the house, and being curios kitties that they are have scratched, sniffed and pounced on every nook and cranny. They are also very very naughty, jumping over into the neighbours house one time too many. I guess cuteness can get you away with anything…

Its been a while since I last update the progress of my future home. Luckily a friend sent my a picture of the constuction site today, the view from where is staying in the nearby condo. I am glad to see that activities has been moving on the ground, with the structure of the first level carpark already visible. Hopefully things pick up pace considerably in the next update.

Ducati and Diesel: A New Partnership in MotoGP

While other MotoGP teams are searching for any type of sponsor to help support their racing efforts, others or shall we say one factory team has sponsors lining up and knocking on their door, and that’s Ducati. The latest sponsor to tie up a deal with Borgo Panigale is Diesel (very expensive streetwear - a pair of their jeans sells for about € 140 here in Italy). The two ‘Made in Italy’ companies signed a two year sponsorship agreement, that will see Diesel’s Mohican logo on the fairings and leathers of Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, who by a very strange coincidence were both sporting mohawks last year. This isn’t the first time that Renzo Rossi’s (no relation to Valentino) Diesel company has sponsored a racing team. The Diesel logo was on a Ducati superbike back in 1999, when the team won their first Superbike title with Raymond Roche.

An important partnership was signed in the first days of this new year between Diesel and Ducati. WELCOME TO DIESEL ISLAND

In 2011 the brand sets off to create a brave new world for the braves and terminally stupid.

It’s the news Diesel fans the world over have been waiting for. After years of feeling marginalized by society, of feeling too colorful, courageous, individualistic or merely stupid to the rest of the world, they’re finally getting a place they can call home. In 2011 they can emigrate to Diesel Island.

This is not a vacation – it is a nation. After launching a movement with the Be Stupid campaign, Diesel’s next step is the creation of an entirely new and stupid society: a tropical utopia where the principles of the Be Stupid manifesto can thrive and flourish. What would it be like to start a nation from scratch? To take what is great from the countries we know, and ditch all that is bad? To re-write the laws? To right social wrongs? A country for only the brave?

The print and outdoor campaign images will show the first pioneers arriving on the island, living exciting experiences, solving some of the old world’s oldest problems (immigration, healthcare systems, transport…) with fresher eyes, and holding wild parties to celebrate the birth of their nation. Think Lost, but with nicer clothes and no polar bears.

A raft of cross-media initiatives (viral videos, a Facebook application and a game based on island’s everyday life, a pirate radio, etc) will complement the traditional media outburst, while the Diesel website will be fully integrated with the campaign: virtual visitors to the island will be able to shape its laws, watch videos of island life, meet its citizens – and of course buy island-friendly clothes via the interactive catalogue. And not to forget, the island will have its own Wikipedia entry, updated every week as the emerging society and its rules and regulations evolve.

Meanwhile, Diesel stores will become the official “embassies” of the island, with flags, maps and explanations of the philosophy that led to the creation of the world’s youngest country. Entering the embassies gives everybody the chance to get official Diesel Island citizenship.

What should the perfect society look like? Can it ever exist? Are the outrageously stupid the best people to create it? And again: will Diesel be brave enough to buy a real island and raise a flag of independence?

Only time will tell. But first, there’s the dream. As the copy says,“Diesel Island is the least fucked-up country in the world. But give us time.”

We start of the new year with a most intriguing release in the local music industry: An album of original compositions featuring vocal contributions from two established singers, Ning Baizura and Jaclyn Victor as well as rising star Shila Amzah from OIAM fame, with ALL songs sung in group form. Upon hearing the project, rumoured to have started all the way in early 2010, I immediately asked myself these three questions: How is the supposed feud between Ning and Jac going to pan out? How is newbie Shila going to stack up against two legendary chanteuses? And, will the combination of the three actually workout?

Well, upon my first full hearing of the album, I am rest assured that all my fears have been allayed. First off, there was never a diva war going on between Ning and Jac, for them working together so comfortably and amicably in this project should put rest to any supposed disagreements between them. Meanwhile, Shila more than holds her own against the other two established performers, displaying a surprising maturity and emotion in her vocal delivery that belies her young age and experience. Watch this space people! But what is most surprising is that the three singers actually complement each other very well, their tones and harmonies blend with ease.

Like an exquisite fragrance, there are three distinctive ‘notes’ to the singing. The ‘top note’ is Jac, sprightly and crisp. Shila is the ’middle note’, smooth and clear. Ning provides the ‘base note’, deep and soulful. There is no over singing, no trying to outdo each other with their vocal prowess. All adlibbing and vocal runs are executed tastefully, so that when the big chorus and finale approaches, the impact is all the more thrilling. The songs, written written mostly by Irwan Simanjuntak and Kevin Chin with singular contributions by Paul Morrison and Alvyn Santiago are immaculately produced to showcase the dynamic vocals.

The album starts of with the joyous, upbeat ITS A BEAUTIFUL LIFE, a celebration of positivity and the love of life. This dance number definitely urges the feet to stand and get jiggy! A powerful opening number indeed. The beat continues with MENARI DALAM HUJAN, featuring a 70s synths and bass, replete with the sexy ‘aahs’ and ‘oohs’ to further accentuate the disco vibe. Another up-tempo track, DIMANA DIMANA, which is currently enjoying airplay features a Latin inspired groove, while HANYA SATU is refreshingly breezy and easy going with an almost Dreamgirls like quality.

Where the album truly shines are in the selection of slower numbers. BERIBU SESALAN is the standout ballad in the collection, featuring a soaring arrangement and truly emotive performances by the threesome. The climax of the song (also presented in an acoustic version) is a crescendo of vocal overlays that literally gives me chills in aural delight. Equally sublime is MENGENANGMU, a haunting ballad serving as tribute to the late Yasmin Ahmad, the preeminent Malaysian director and screenwriter. SEMUA ISI HATIMU and TEMAN are also good tracks, with the latter a heavenly and inspiring gospel-esque song on the importance of friendship. Finally, the lone English track TOMORROW’S CALLING is an understated guitar laden track delivered impeccably by the three singers with an uplifting message of hope and the need to protect our children as the heir of our future.

All in all, 3 SUARA is a highly listenable and enjoyable collection of songs that truly showcases the best out of the three talented singers. I highly recommend this album. So rush to your favourite music store immediately as the first pressing of this album is only 3,000 units! You definitely don't want to miss out.

Celebrating the new year in style @ Ning's 2011 Showcase

On 31 Dec 2010, i had the great privilege of attending Ning’s 2011 Showcase at the Celebrities Hall of Music, Solaris Mont Kiara to usher in the new year as well as introduce to her fans some of the new tracks from her upcoming release, here 11th full album entitled DEWA.

Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘light’, the metaphor is apt describing the current stage in her life and career, of being independent and finding her rebirth in the ever changing and dynamic landscape of the music industry.

The performance lasted almost two hours, with a repertoire spanning her entire musical legacy, from Curiga to Awan Yang Terpilu and then onwards and upwards with selections from the upcoming album. Ning’s voice has never been more powerful and clear. Plus her soulful reinterpretation and rendition, impeccable and energetic showmanship coupled with new arrangements under the guide of here musical director Alwyn Santiago gave new life to all of her classic hits.

The entire performance is indeed a trip down memory lane and truly a spectacular and momentous night for the diehard fans. Interspersed between the set list, she opened up to the audience shared some of her life story with interesting trivia's and anecdotes. It speaks volumes of the evolution in Ning’s artistry and how far she has gone, while acknowledging her ups and downs in here ever winding carrier. finally to come to point where she feels content and blessed to where she is now. For me, the highlight of the night is her rendition of the classic hit Pasti, where she confessed that at the time of recording the song way back in 1994 she couldn't have believed that she would ever find her perfect love until now. Dedicated to her dearest hubby, she sang with an earnest conviction that brought tears to the whole audience. One of the many magical moments on stage that night .

Her joy and newfound outlook in life is very much reflected in the new songs, ever expanding her craft and experimenting with new sounds and attitudes. The new tracks, from the edgy dance tracks Mama Papa and Raksasa to the sublime downtempo numbers Alhamdulillah and Sampai Bila sounds fresh and current and unlike anything you heard of in the local airwaves. Audi Mok, the producer of the new album isn't kidding when he said that you will hear Ning like you've never heard her before.

Moving on into the year, Ning plans to do a nationwide road show to promote the new album, culminating to a special concert at Istana Budaya on 1-2 July, her first solo concert in 13 years. The new year will also see the release of her new movie ‘Cun’ as well as ‘3 Suara’ the special collaborative album with Jac and Shila.

With the rebirth of Ning in DEWA, I am wishing her all the best in her career for 2011. Stay tuned for my review of the upcoming album as and when it released.

#10 BEBASKAN This song, a personal favourite of mine from the ERTI PERTEMUAN album, is the very definition of understated elegance. First performed live for the very first time at the 2003 Anugerah Era awards, this Audi Mok produced ballad, with lyrics by exudes a certain degree of sophistication and adult contemporariness that I consider quite rare amongst the many songs in Ning’s repertoire. Her vocal performance of Shah Shamsiri’s lyrics is subdued and unrushed, yet belies great warmth. The song also is available in two other versions. The serene Quiet Storm Mix is an acoustic presentation highlighting Ning’s vocals to great effect. But the greatest surprise is epic 7-minute Classic Club Mix. Here Audi Mok lets loose by turning the song on its head at transforming it into an all out clubbers anthem! Also , Ning recorded fresh vocals for the the remix, adding the necessary sass, and backing vocals and a diva moment bridge, imploring you to be free on the dance floor!

#09 IZINKAN You may be intrigued as to how this obscure track, dating all way back from the NING album managed to make its way to the Top 10? Well, I am going to answer that with an even potentially controversial and divisive statement: Best. Vocal. Ever! Yes folks, say what you may of my choice but me this gentile ballad by Johari Teh is the canvass to which Ning put use her god’s given talent in the most sublime manner. In this one song (and perhaps unbeknownst to herself), she displayed her classically trained vocal range and all inherent singing techniques at her disposal, giving it colours, energy and soul. A triumph!

#08 TEGUH The title song produced by Hari Kish Menon from the album of the same name is an inspiring modern pop-ballad with the now famous line ‘Bersama, berdua… Cita-cita dan cinta kan teguh untuk selamanya’. With themes of reaching for your dreams, rising above and never looking back, Ning voice soars over the synth strings. The dynamics of the song is upwards, reaching a climactic bridge and ever-scaling chorus.

#07 ANTARA MUNGKIN DAN CURIGA Like all good trilogies, there should be a prologue, interlude and an end. Just like Curiga casts doubt on the sincerity of love, and Mungkin opens up of the possibility of reciprocating love… comes the knock-out track that debates between the two: do you give in to chance or forever remain a cynic? A beautiful dilemma indeed. The song is another epic ballad by Ross Ariffin and Johari Teh, whereby Ning’s voice is soulful and strong. Meanwhile the bridge features some of her most legendary, thrilling, and accomplished adlibs. Again try and imitate the ‘to-toots’ and a fan will precisely know which song you are referring too. It still send me to blissful shivers whenever I hear the song.

#06 SELAGI ADA… (CINTA) from the comeback album comes the comeback ballad that truly cemented her return to the Malaysian music industry. This power ballad written by then husband and wife team Nurul and Ajai was judged Song Of The Year at AIM12. The song also made the finals of Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) under the Best Ballad category.

#05 PASTI Considered a signature song of Ning, the sunny and carefree love song by Jari serves as the lead single to the NING album. The sparse and sparkly production makes the perfect base to which Ning displays her vocals with amazing clarity. Of course, who wouldn't remember that the song features her now classic and legendary yell of ‘Passtiiiii!’. The song is still sounds fresh all this years and simply a joy to listen to

#04 CURIGA The song that started it all. The one that made people stand up and listen. The one that entirely brought about an exciting new chapter in the Malaysian music industry. Hearing it back after all this years does indeed makes one nostalgic of how far her carrier has come. This song is unique at the time because there is no other song like it. In a sea of rock and rap, comes this classically inclined ballad by Jari and lyrics by Mahzan B with the unmistakable crisp soprano voice by the rising starlet. Ning’s maiden appearance at the Anugerah Juara Lagu competition yielded her the Best Ballad award and exposed here talent furthere to the masses, with here simple yet elegant performance (not forgetting the backing singers… hmm speaking of which where are they and what are they doing now eh?), earning her a thunderous applause from the audience. The track was also nominated for Song Of The Year at AIM '93. The music video was nominated for Best Music Video at AIM '93

#03 AWAN YANG TERPILU This special ballad written by Lin Li Zhen is near and dear to many hearts, but perhaps none more so than Ning herself. As this could be the theme of her entire life: the story of an estranged relationship between father and daughter, brought apart by the choices in life to pursue in what you believe. The tale is told beautifully by master class lyrics by the late Loloq, considered by many as the most poetic, meaningful of all his works. Even Loloq himself considers it his most accomplished piece of writing. Consider the opening stanza: Kerana cinta, aku kembara… Bagai camar, melintas laut, mencari pohon untuk berteduh and immediately you can imagine how the words mirrors Ning’s own meandering journey. The tale is also brought to life vividly by Virginia Kennedys heart-wrenching and poignant music video. The song struck a nerve with general audience and took home awards for Song Of The Year and Best Music Video in the 2004 AIM awards. The song also participated in the Anugerah Juara Lagu 20 finale (to this day, I still feel it is the most deserving winner) where Ning chose simplicity over extravagance in her performance.

#02 IN ANOTHER LIFE If there is ever a song that forever embellished on our minds that Ning has the credibility to make it in the international stage it is this one. Written by Sam Lorber, Greg Pretipino and Andrew Gold, the ballad is said to have been originally intended for Mariah Carey. Story has it that upon Ning’s rendition of the track, Mariah gave here seal of approval. But whether this is more rumour than fact is immaterial, for indeed Ning’s vocal delivery is this otherworldly and diction impeccable. The song itself is sublime, I especially like the ‘waves crashing and seagulls chirping’ sound effects sampled at the beginning, very typical of the time but so appropriate to sere as an intro to the glorious voice that proceeds. So successful is this track that it broke new ground by topping radio charts in both Malaysia and Singapore. Moreover, it spent an amazing 11 weeks atop Singapore radio charts. Amazingly this song has been covered by several international singers, most notably American actress/singer Jennifer Love Hewitt and Hong Kong chanteuse Sandy Lam. But of course, none can ever match the truly mesmerising original by the diva.

#01 KE SAYUP BINTANG We have come to the peak to what I consider the quintessential and finest track of her career. The title track of the same named album is simply perfection. In my opinion, no other song in her vast catalogue culminates perfectly the elements of writing, production, lyrics and of course Ning’s voice, delivery and rendition. Fauzi Marzuki produced a dreamlike and heavenly ballad, adding it a sense of drama and mystery with a steady percussive beat serving as the undercurrent amidst an ambient synth arrangement. Meanwhile, Ning’s vocal performance of Amran Omar’s wonderful lyrics is yearning and heartfelt, again serves as an example of understated elegance. I remember reading the reviews of this ballad at that time even comparing her phrasing and nuances to that of Anita Baker. The music video, which features Ning in a short haircut is simple, yet bursting with a kaleidoscope of colours, befitting the starry universe the song imagines. With all elements combined, this track stands to this day as my all time personal favourite.

This concludes the journey through Ning’s vast catalogue. With the launch of DEWA in the new year, I am hoping to be surprised and amazed once again that the list would reshuffle. Already there are potential tracks such as ‘Mama Papa’ and ‘Raksasa’ and I believe the rest of the songs would be equally as exciting and ground breaking. #20 ALANGKAH In the original iteration, Ning’s husky vocals complements the fresh production by Hari. The lyrics, written by Tesh R.S (of Casey’s ‘Seribu Impian’ fame) is positive and uplifting, centre's around ambitions, dreams and fantasies. The track is also one of the very few in Ning’s entire catalogue who’s remix is officially available. The Gergasi Mix, which is exclusively available in the ‘Kasi Gegar ‘ Compilation ups the ante with some vinyl scratching, thumpier bass, additional adlibs and samples, giving the song a distinctive urban flavour.

#19 ASMARA Perhaps the best up-tempo number the TEGUH album, this Mark J Fiest produced track is just dripping in R&B soul goodness. Ning performs with a decidedly confident swagger befitting the click and sexy beats.

#18 KAU & AKU This much beloved track always reminds me of a breezy day at the beach. The jazzy written by Ross Ariffin makes full use of Ning’s easy-going delivery with lyrics written by herself. As vanilla as the sentiments, the song is also one of the most controversial in her a career. A spat with her recording company back then resulted in a ban from her performing all songs from the sophomore album. That meant that the performance for the 1994 Juara Lagu finale had to be replaced with the boy band Kool, which remixed the song to suit their catcy dance steps. Ultimately, the performance won the ‘pop rock’ category, which also meant that Ning shared in the trophy and cash prize for the contribution as lyricist.

#17 PERCAYA / JUST BELIEVE The suave and sophisticated first single from the TEGUH album (and later reincarnated in English in the ALWAYS album), represents Ning’s evolution to experiment with a more urban sounding R&B. Produced by Mark J Fiest, the intention of the Malay and English double underscores Ning’s grand ambition of making her mark in the international arena. Unfortunately, the it didn't come to fruition as Ning was cheated by here management back then, one of the many setbacks in her tumultuous career.

#16 WATER AND SALT The only ballad from the electronic and dance heavy EASTTOWEST, album the song is indeed an understated gem. Completely unadorned save for acoustic piano, flute (by the renowned maestro Andrea Griminelli) and strings to accompany Ning's yearning and melancholic vocal performance. Simply mesmerising!

#15 SENANG TARI Renowned local media blogger Sultanmuzaffar, in his review of the ERTI PERTEMUAN, exclaimed this song as ‘bijaksana!’. And that is indeed the most apt way of describing this intriguing track. As the theme song to the acclaimed short film ‘Pua’, this track written by Farihin Abdul Fatah and Ain stands as one of the most unique songs in Ning’s collection; a mix of arabesque percussion and instruments interspersed in a trance pulse and beat, giving it a futuristic bent to the song. Ning’s vocal delivery is understated and sensual, while the French monologue in the beginning only adds to the element of mystery. Virginia Kennedy, who directed the music video sees Ning reimagined as a gothic goddess, recalling inspired cues from Madonna’s Frozen and Nothing Really Matters videos, respectively. Bijaksana indeed…

#14 DEKAT PADAMU The title track from Ning’s debut album is simply sublime. The song, written by Jari is soothing with its saxophone accompaniment, while Ning phrases the lyrics by Lukhman S with elegance and poise. Towards the end, she presents here trademark whistle register, but still controlled and never overdone.

#13 WARNA I luv, luv, luv this track! There is a certain kineticism and energy to the song that I really couldn't put my finger on, but it never fails to put a smile on my face and makes me wanna stand up and dance: the vibe is simply that irresistible. If Ning is considering a set list for the live concert scheduled this July, I would hands down recommend this song as the opening performance. JP Abdullah managed to create essentially gospel infused pop song (think Mariah’s Emotions), while Ning performed here self-penned lyrics with soul and finesse. Plus the unmistakable adlib has made the song even more memorable. Proof? Simply quote ‘Pah du-duh, pa du-duh-pa!’ to a fan, and they now exactly which song you are referring to…

#12 KEMBALI (2003) This song embodies a significant juncture in Ning’s ever-winding career. for it presents with the most unique of challenges: After an almost insurmountable controversy, how does one ever make a comeback? In Ning’s case: by addressing the issue head on, and more importantly by releasing an irresistibly catchy yet poignant song with aim to reintroduce Ning to the local music scene. The first single from the SELAGI ADA… NING album is produced by Ajai, with lyrics written by Ning herself. The contemporary R&B pop song, which features a masterful string arrangement by Fauzi Marzuki, A sophisticated music video directed by Virginia Kennedy, which features CGI elements also complements the song beautifully. Her ‘return’ has definitely been cemented in 2003 when she emerged the surprise winner of the Anugerah ERA Choice Female Vocalist.

#11 PENJARA KASIH You know its gonna be epic, when it starts off with a saxophone prologue. And what a glorious ballad it is, forever embellished by her fans as the ’bagai ikan’ song. Written by Jari, the song presents an element of drama utilising a heart-beat rhythm to serve as a undercurrent to the song. Ning’s voice has never been more clear and flawless. The meaning full and deep lyrics by Lukhman S narrates a controlling relationship (Aku perhiasan mata, pada yang sudi memandang. Jari jemari yang tidak membelai, terhalang oleh kaca berharga), while the killer chorus with the legendary ‘goldfish in a bowl’ analogy eventually builds up to a rousing finale. And just like that, the song bookends with the sax instrumental again. Like i said, epic.

With anticipation of the diva’s 11th studio album DEWA reaching fever pitch, I thought it would be the perfect time to revisit and honour Ning’s vast repertoire of songs.

In a career spanning 17 years, she has given birth ten albums under her belt plus numerous more from soundtracks, compilations and guest performances. She has entertained us with at least 120 songs, all showcasing her exquisite vocal range with versatility and finesse. Ning has been noted as the voice of Malaysian soul and R&B, but her genre also expands to hip-hop, dance, electronica, rock and even keroncong (albeit pop infused, hehe).

Thus in an almost herculean effort, I have attempted to distil all of the songs into a quintessential list which I believe define who she is through my ears. But please, forgive me for being decidedly super greedy at listing 35 (in honour of her present age) instead of the customary ten. Its difficult to choose when you are spoiled with so many aural delights… So grab a nice warm cup of cocoa and enjoy this trip down memory lane and cris-cross time as we look forward to Ning’s newest offering in the coming year, marking her rebirth and reinvention.

#35 AKU RINDU PADAMU Starting off our countdown is the lead single from what is considered Ning’s least received offering, PUJAANKU. Perhaps in a marketing decision to make here more relatable to the masses (read; kampung folk), the end result is an almost typical Malay ballad of lost love written by the eponymous LY and Baiduri combo. Still, the song does highlight an important point: than Ning simply cant doesn't fit the typical mode. She is capable of so much more… as evidenced by the selection that follows.

#34 NATURAL WOMAN The title song represents an important era in Ning’s career. After virtually being ostracized by the Malaysian media following the FHM confessions debacle, Ning sought an ‘escape’ by heading to Japan to try here luck there. There, she cut an album with producers Chica Asamoto and Nao Nakamura and the result is an experimental English album which has elements of trance and two-step. NATURAL WOMAN is the most sought after finds among Ning’s diehard fans due to its rarity of being released only in Japan. This bouncy song in particular also showcases her attempt at singing in Japanese.

#33 PUJAAN KU Another title song, this time written by Is Wow. The background synths and effects gives this jazzy number some neo-soul edge that makes it stand out from the rest of the staid collection.

#32 GETARAN RINDUKU / JUST WANNA GET CLOSE TO YOU This song, written by Mark J Fiest exemplifies 90s American-style R&B at it finest, particularly in its English incarnation. With a base-heavy production, this suave track could have sit comfortably on the Billboard charts had the initial plans of taking her global came to fruition.

#31 DUGAANKU This beautiful track that bookends her debut album has been a favourite to many due to its truly heart-breaking lyrics (the killer line: apakah kita nanti tiada dapat serasi? ataukah hanya aku bermimpi ‘tuk memiliki), Ning’s composed vocal delivery and the flute and guitar accompaniment that gives the song a Latin inspired flavour. You can almost imagine a star-crossed couple dancing there last sensual tango together before departing forever.

#30 AGE OF POLLUTION The first single from her third English album is a miasma of heavy electronica bass beats designed to complement Ning's whispery delivery in what could have been the club anthem the Live Earth Concerts. With themes of environmentalism and taking action, the sprightly animated music video has also become winner in the 2007 Rome Film Festival in the video clip section.

#29 ANTARA KITA This duet with Hedi Yunus was intended to be her cross-over ticket to the Indonesian market and vice versa. Their voices complements each other well in this power ballad, with Ning’s clear and strong high register combining beautifully with Hedi’s milky sexy vocals. It remains her most popular song there. It goes to show that if we set our petty differences aside, the two nations can indeed make great music together. Like i always say: kita adalah serumpun.

#28 BAWA DAKU PERGI From Malaysia’s first full length animated feature ‘Silat Lagenda’ by the ever ground-breaking KRU brothers, comes this fresh and fun up-tempo R&B track is tailor suited to Ning’s whispery and relaxed singing.

#27 MENU MINGGU INI Don't let this breezy and understated jazzy number by Aidit Alfian track fool you. It belies some of the sensual lyrics ever written by the devilishly brilliant Ad Samad. As Ning sexily coos to her lover: Andainya diriku kan jadi, patung ujian rempuh, yang sewenang kau lakukan, sekehendaknya hatimu, aku sedia relakan. And just as the song about to end, it abruptly turns the table by asking: Menu minggu ini, mungkin tidakkan kau menduga, sekali ini... berterbalikkan watak kita... kinky!

#26 HUMAN This Human League remake was updated for her second English album ALWAYS by producer Hari ‘Haze’ Menon. I remember it clearly when I first heard the song on the radio, and could have sworn it was a black singer from the States performing the song. Ning voice stands out over a gospel–esque choir and uplifting production.

#25 MUNGKIN A classic up-tempo track from her debut album written by Ning’s own brother Badiq and features the now ubiquitous trademark ooohs and aahs. The song was made even more memorable by a Vogue inspired performance during the Juara Lagu Finals in 1994.

#24 KAU PELITAKU This song speaks of a daughter expressing her gratitude towards her mother’s immeasurable and unwavering love and sacrifice. This is very much about Ning’s own story and the relationship with her mother, who is very much the centre and backbone of Ning’s life and career ups and downs through the years. Another track written by Hari, it features Ning’s very own lyrics. Her sincere performance accompanied by a sax interlude never fails to make my heart soar. Truly inspiring.

#23 JAUH A non-album ballad, this is indeed a rare gem. Featuring Ning’s subdued, almost vulnerable vocals as well as an understated production.

#22 ANGEL OF MY HEART This understated English ballad by Mark J Fiest is presented in a paired down, almost dreamy production, thus highlighting Ning’s vocals to great effect. As always here diction impeccable and her performance magical.

#21 DRAMA Rounding off the first batch of songs is this simply high-camp and diva-tastic track. Cleverly sampling Beethoven's piano loop, it also features guest vocals by her protégés Nikki and the late Yanie. The instant hit, written by Audi Mok and lyrics by Ad Samad created quite a stir in the Malaysian music scene when it was debuted at the ERA music awards. Since then, an English version has been recorded and remixed for the EASTTOWEST album, as well as being much copied by drag performances throughout. As they always say, imitation is the sincerest from of flattery.

What happens when diva Ning Baizura, ingénue Jaclyn victor and rising starlet Shila join forces in a secret album ? the result is 3 SUARA, a special project consisting of 10 ‘three-ets’ (is there such a word?) which will hit stores in December.

This unique idea to combine the three singers came from Kevin Chin, a Malaysian working in Singapore who also selected the tracklist. Meanwhile, Indonesian producer Irwan Simanjutak helmed the production of the album.

Ever since my planned getaway to London & Paris this coming April, I have been eying for a trench coat for quite some time now. Although the de-rigour trench would be a Burberry of course, I don't mind settling for something as stylish and a bit more wallet friendly, hehe.

Diesel opens its first large format concept store in Shibuya, Tokyo

Diesel’s evolution beyond denim into an edgy and irreverent lifestyle brand is on full display at its new flagship here.

As to be expected, there are plenty of jeans washed and sandblasted to achieve every imaginable effect. But the store is also home to a café, an exhibition space and a corner selling Diesel’s recently launched home collection, which includes a goose down filled sofa and bedding printed with photos of vintage stereo equipment.

“It’s not just that you’re going in somewhere to buy clothes, you are entering an atmosphere, the reality of a brand,” said Diesel founder and president Renzo Rosso in the WWD interview, who hosted a mini hot dog-fueled party Thursday night to fete the store. “It’s an environment in which people can hang out.”

The two-level flagship opened to the public on last Saturday. It makes its home in the bustling shopping an entertainment district of Shibuya in a building that also houses a Tommy Hilfiger, multi-brand boutique Tomorrowland and some other retailers and restaurants. Once shoppers make their way past a cluster of slot machines stocked with play tokens, they can take in the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s denim, apparel, handbags, eyewear, watches and other accessories. Prices range from about ¥7,140 for a t-shirt to ¥28,350 for a pair of jeans blacked with a coal-type effect.

The store also carries some limited edition items exclusive to the store, including sold or silver high-top sneakers and a jacket made from raw denim that is supposed to age 10 times faster than the standard indigo-dyed fabric. The Glorious Chain Café serves up hearty fare like pancakes, eggs benedict, ice cream sandwiches as well as glasses of Rosso’s own wine.

Market conditions in Japan are very difficult at the moment but Diesel is faring considerably better than many other fashion brands and its sales in Japan, its largest market, grew 7% last year to €220 million, or about $300 million. The brand has not cut its prices on specific items but it has adjusted its merchandizing mix to have more products at entry-level price points. Diesel is aware of the importance of developing engaging stores and nurturing close relationships with customers through online platforms....

Hot Models Get Busy in Brooklyn Law Library

The library at Brooklyn Law School is fast becoming the most sexual law library in America. Last week, the class of 2010 dedicated a plaque inside the library warning students, “It’s supposed to be hard.” This week, we’ve learned that the law library also plays host to some hard bodies.

Apparently, Brooklyn Law allowed models from Diesel Jeans to use its law library for a photoshoot. The jeans didn’t stay on for long. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the law library for the 67th best law school in America….

A spokesperson for Brooklyn Law School told Above the Law how the photo shoot came about. Apparently school officials were caught a little bit off guard by the nature of the shoot:

Television and movie producers frequently ask for permission to use our beautiful facilities as a backdrop and we try to oblige when we can. When we gave Diesel jeans permission to do a photo shoot, we understood that jeans, and not what is worn under them, would be the subject of the shoot. We would not want to create the impression that the featured attire was approved by us.

Well, I for one approve of the featured attire. And really, I don’t think the issue is the clothing, so much as the setting. You know what I mean? Check out this desk:

Undoubtedly there is a Brooklyn Law student reading this post at that very desk. And I bet that person didn’t think to put on a condom before he started studying today.

In another clear example that not winning do not necessarily equate to failure if the talent is undeniable (read: Faizal Tahir), another reality star has steadily but surely increased in stature to become a reputable force in the local music industry.

That Aizat, the AF Season 5 alumni, would be rising star that he is today has indeed surprised many (he only lasted up to week seven). Yet his success is deservedly so: witness the breakout hits ‘Kau Aku’ and ‘Hanya Kau Yang Mampu’ from his first effort, (literally titled) Percubaan Pertama. Riding on the latest trend of online distribution, these songs hit the right nerve with the tween and the socially connected generation, as as a result has been legally downloaded an outstanding 1.3 million (and counting) times, a record that translates into real mega-bucks. His debut album also served up with other smash singles, Lagu Kita and Fikirlah. And, after a good showing in two successive Anugerah Juara Lagu finals, anticipation is sky high for his sophomore effort.

Clearly that is what on this young artistes’ mind when releasing the follow-up URUSAN AIZAT AMDAN. From its creative title and packaging, to the thoughtful song-writing and impeccable production, the self financed album speaks of progression and musical acumen that betrays his age. Tonally, the seven track album more mature than that his debut, with influences from Brit and alt-rock acts that are his inspirations more forthcoming. The addition of two English tracks further expands his repertoire to surprising results.

The album kicks of with YEARS FROM NOW, the excellent upbeat opener with a an intriguing introspective underbelly: here Aizat boldly contemplates his future career and life direction right of the bat! With the 70’s-esque strings and unmistakable ‘pah-rup-pup pah’ backing vocals, the song sounds surprisingly fresh unlike anything on the current radio waves. On the next song, Aizat tempers the mood with the MANA OH MANA, a simmering ballad of yearning love and builds into rock out crescendo. Here, Aizat performs his best vocal delivery, easily displaying his range and is bound to be another hit.

Perhaps the only slight in the album it is the songs SENYUM, which is a tad laidback and does not quite jive with the rest of the collection. Meanwhile, the message of hope in ERTI HARI INI conjures an almost Scorpions ‘Wind of Change’ –like moment in its positivity.

Aizat is always known to be sempoi (i.e. cheeky and easy-going) and the absolutely delightful SUSUN SILANG KATA is best representative if this trait. This jazzy and joyful first single is highly addictive and is sure to put a spring in the step of the listener. Contrast that breeziness with the stark EMOTIONS, the most sophisticated and accomplished track in the whole album. While its a slow burner, but as the title suggests belays deep feelings, menacing almost, of love gained and lost. The arrangement is sparse and subdued befitting Aizat’s delicate, melancholic vocal delivery interspersed with lush sweeping strings towards the end. Definitely the best track in the entire set. The album then bookends with SUNGAI LUI, another excellent rock-ballad that melds into an all out stadium anthem towards the end.

Like the title of the album, Urusan truly reflects Aizat’s artistic vision and song-writing gift with clarity and confidence. This highly listenable set portends a higher level of song-writing and production Aizat is capable of that this listener hopes he will explore more in future endeavours. Percubaan kedua yang cemerlang!

The wild creativity of the West Coast arts and crafts movement, the free spirit of rock festivals and the sun-drenched landscapes of California all infuse the latest Diesel Black Gold collection, designed by Sophia Kokosalaki.

The pieces look handmade, as if patched and customized by their wearers. Colours are soft and diffuse: dusty pinks, greys and tans. Deeply rooted in Diesel’s DNA, a vintage feel runs through the collection, suggesting clothes that have been worn and loved through endless summers. The edgy influence of rock and roll adds a sexy refrain. Hand-painted desert scenes and the quirky shapes of cacti – in the form of jewellery, bags or shoes – transport the wearer to the rugged side of California.

Three years ago I have launched this blog mainly with aim to share with my friends my DIESEL obsessions and proclivities. And a long the way I have offered glimpses of my personal life, the ranting and raving of a (so call) successful life. I am grateful for all the visits from everyone who stumbled upon this little corner of cyberspace and the feedback/comments given. To Renzo and co i.e. the good guys at Diesel S.p.A , I hope I am not in breach of any copy write protections, hehe… I am but a humble messenger spreading the good word of your ironic and whimsical ideals. Keep designer fabulous clothes and stay at the cutting edge of fashion always.

During the last year, perhaps the biggest achievement of mine is finally taking the plunge and buying a place to call my own. I hope construction will proceed with the minimum of hiccups and that by 2013, i will finally be able to open the door and put out the welcome mat to my ‘astana’.

I have also taken up a more active lifestyle, diligently (and almost religiously) going to the gym to improve my scrawny physique. I have to say that I am happy with the results I see in the mirror thus far. And the complements that I got doesn't hurt either, and further ignite my enthusiasm to do more.

Also, Apart from the countless excursions to my second home (aka Singapore, hehe), I have made my way to visit Jakarta and Bali for the first time: Modernity and tradition in contrasts. I came back with a feeling that both of our cultures share a rich history and heritage that it would be a shame to throw it all away on mindless and unnecessary misunderstandings. Like the saying goes: kita semua serumpun.

Finally, though corny and nerdy as it may sound, embracing FB actually improved my social life tremendously hehe. Far from being cold and anonymous , I have the opportunity of getting to know and meet many new friends. Going out to town or hitting the clubs is now all the more fun now that the pretence of walking up to strangers is somewhat diminished now that there is this common virtual denominator.

Looking forward into the future I see endless possibilities. Perhaps one of the biggest event next year is the Eurotrip that I am so looking forward to. Cant wait to report to you live from the Diesel Flagship stores in Bond Street and Etienne Marcel. I have a feeling its gonna be tres magnifique!

But till then, HAPPY 3RD ANNIVERSARY DIESELFREAK. May success begets success always…

Sophia Kokosalaki presented her second collection for the Men’s Diesel Black Gold line at the recent Milan Men’s Fashion show. This time, she pays homage to the elegance of sartorial construction. The Diesel Black Gold SS ‘11 men’s collection subverts the codes of tailoring to create a surreal, inventive stylishness.

A bespoke suit is at its most intriguing when it’s still under construction. At the first fitting, the tailor’s chalk lines and stitches are still visible. The artefact is not yet complete – it’s halfway between dream and reality. Diesel Black Gold’s SS ‘11 men’s collection evokes and enhances this mysterious moment. The garments look unfinished, as if ready to adapt to their owners. Hardware provides a flash of rebellion; colour a dash of style. The result is surreal and unexpectedly rock and roll – call it tailor-made punk. The look sums up the Diesel Black Gold man: creative, intelligent, unorthodox and casually charming.

The garments are challenging yet classic – an entertaining clash of styles. Key items include a super light & shiny nylon trench with a layered unfinished lapel, an under-construction jacket with metallic details; and even a knitted dinner jacket. Slim jersey and leather pants with cuts are matched with reversible waistcoats unveiling the in-progress side of garments.

The collection’s themes reflect a preoccupation with the tailor’s art. Numbers, recalling tape measures, are printed on the lining of jackets and on T-shirts and shirts. Images of tape measures also appear on the collars of jackets and the sides of pants. The architectural lines of paper patterns inspire curious cuts. Diesel’s Stupid Ad Campaign Earns Award & Ban

Chances are you've seen Diesel's latest controversial ad campaign called 'Be Stupid.' There's Pixie Geldof riding backwards on the handlebars of a bike (in 4-inch heels no less) and a striking brunette clad solely in a bikini taking a photograph of her nether regions while an irritated lion looks on. No, it's not the smartest ad campaign, but then, they knew that. Brain cells aside, Diesel did manage to score a pretty prestigious award thanks to the campaign. "Anomaly, creator of Diesel's 'be stupid' ad campaign... [won] the Grand Prix for outdoor advertising at this year's Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival," says Fast Company.

While Diesel’s manifesto on idiocy has found quit a few fans in the ad world, it’s managed to piss off the Brits.The British Advertising Standards Authority has in fact banned some of the same ads that were being toasted in Cannes just weeks prior. “Diesel’s ‘Be Stupid’ campaign, which featured female models flashing their (mostly unseen) breasts at security cameras and snapping crotch shots of themselves, has been blasted by the ad watchdog for being indecent and antisocial, according to the paper,” says Stylist. Chalk it up to a simple case of British conservatism and French adoration of all things titillating. Regardless, in the fashion ad space all press is good press. Meaning, boycotts and all, this controversial campaign has proven to be anything but its slogan.

In the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, the matriarch Bloody Mary sang of a mystical volcanic island, an exotic paradise that is forbidden to the US Navy sailors except for its highest ranking officers.

Fortunately the real Bali is as enchanting, yet very much welcoming to surfers, sun worshippers and shoppers who come in by the droves.

After hearing how such a wonderful time my friends had here, I have finally made my way to experience it for myself last week. This is after having booked my ticket and accommodation almost seven months in advance (the ‘joy’ that is AirAsia and Tune Hotel, hehe).

For a more authentic retail therapy experience, there are shops galore offering local hand made arts and crafts. (Tip: Haggle as much as possible as the prices are most definitely on the high side due to its touristy location)

I guess, someone is in Hard Rock heaven, hehe…

While Kuta beach is overly developed and commercialised (read: a bit dirty), on the opposite side of the island lies Dreamland beach in Bukit peninsula near Jimbaran. Here the sands is powder gold and the water pristine. But one must be careful when swimming here, as it is also renowned for its dangerous shore break: the waves are so tall it could overwhelm you!

Of course Bali is not just about the beaches, for the island is very much steeped in centuries old traditions and culture.

None is more alive than at GWK Cultural Park, Jimbaran famed for its Wisnu and Garuda statues, and live Kecak and Barongan dances…

Other places of interest is Monkey Temple (Pura Bukit Sari) is located on Sangeh village. Here these primates literally run the joint!

Do be careful of your belongings, for these furry thieves are super quick with there paws…

Another place visited is Pura Taman Ayun, a royal temple of the Mengwi Empire. It is still utilised by the locals for prayers.

But the highlight of the trip is definitely Pura Tanah Lot, one of the main pilgrimage sights on the island. Finally I'm here!

All i can say is Bali has certainly lived up to my expectations. If there is anything that is on the downside is the terrible mecet. Even though the island is not to large, getting to one place to another on the road is frustrating when your bumper to bumper. As such, the five days spent here here is not enough as there are still many places I have yet to visit, such as Uluwatu, Mount Agung and Ubud. You could say that I am saving it for a later date ;)

How to decorate your home… successfully

While my Astana Lumayan is three years away, I already found my self glancing through home deco magazines for kitchen layouts, wall paper designs and colour swatches and the likes right now, hehe… I wonder if this kind of euphoric rush of inspiration searching is felt by every new prospective home owner.

Truth be told there are no definite furnishing theme at this moment. However, I definitely envision my crib to be: modern, sophisticated, edgy, rebellious yet with a twist of irony … and not to mention it also has to be sustainable and eco-friendly too ;). And what else perfectly embodies this design ethos that I am looking for than DIESEL’s home furnishing line. If have the means, I would love to have a few of these nifty items in my future home. Or at least, something that resembles these items, hehe…

Diesel’s Renzo Rosso sold his first pair of handmade jeans for $2 (around Rs89 now) in Italy. The founder and president of the iconic denim brand made the pair with 2m of denim, using his mother’s sewing machine, when he was 15. He dipped the denim in bleach to lighten the shade of blue. “I don’t know why, maybe because the denim was stiff, but I took the jeans and did this,” he says in his heavily accented English, mimicking the motion of placing the jeans on the floor and scrubbing them.

The first distressed denim was born and worn by Rosso’s friends. “That would give me money to go out at night and drink. This was 40 years ago, can you imagine?” Rosso says.

Four decades later, Diesel has set up its flagship store in Mumbai, the first in India. I meet the man behind the brand in Juhu on the day of the store launch. He is here on a short visit and this is the first time he has stepped into the store. Dressed though he is in a dark shirt with a black blazer and, of course, jeans, it may seem that Rosso needs a haircut and shave. But the unruly mop, the three-day-old beard and unbuttoned shirt that reveals a silver pendant bearing his initials, all add up to the casual and cool look that’s quintessentially Diesel.

Rosso has partnered with Reliance Brands Ltd to bring Diesel to India. Darshan Mehta, CEO, Reliance Brands, is also at the 7,500 sq. ft store, showing Rosso around.

For the company that created a market for new jeans that looked old, something that may have sounded stupid turned out to be a smart idea. In fact, Diesel’s latest advertising campaign is asking people to “be stupid”—right from the signs at the entrance and as a running theme inside. “Smart may have the brains, but stupid has the balls,” says one of them.

As a Diesel philosophy, no two stores in any part of the world can look the same—the displays and merchandise are different. Rosso is happy with the look of the Mumbai store but he still doesn’t think it’s complete. “This is me. Even when a new collection is coming out, I never say, wow, this is fantastic. It could be better. It’s kind of a malady. You want to achieve perfection,” he says, sipping his espresso on a white couch on the first floor of the three-storey store.

The Diesel story began in Italy when a friend offered Rosso a job as production director of a small company manufacturing jeans. In 1978, he created Diesel, starting with his own line of distressed jeans. He named it that because it was easy to pronounce the world over. “Everyone was shocked with my idea to sell distressed jeans 32 years ago. Nobody understood it. They make broken denim? They must be crazy. We had few customers,” he says. But Rosso was convinced: “I defend my opinion, and developed the concept till one day, it became a part of every luxury line everywhere,” he says, smiling.

Denim before Diesel was a symbol for rebels, feels Rosso. It wasn’t fashion. Diesel made denim fashionable. “Premium will become important, because premium is more real and less expensive than luxury denim,” he says. Now, with its headquarters in Molvena, Italy, Diesel is present in around 80 countries, with 5,000 points of sale, and had a turnover of €1.3 billion (around Rs7,579 crore now) in 2009. The hardest nut to crack was the US. How do you take denim to a country that took denim to the masses, is the birthplace of iconic denim brands such as Levi’s, and then sell it at a higher price?

“No one accepted our price. We would sell jeans at about $62-64.” Their first licensing agreement with an American company had to be terminated because it started manufacturing cheaper denim. The second one went bust because the company it partnered with went bankrupt. “I don’t know if I was being brave or stupid but I decided to keep the employees and start over. I called friends for advice and apologized to old customers. I couldn’t afford any more mistakes,” he says.

In 1992, they came up with the Diesel for Successful Living advertising campaign. The campaign made a mockery of American advertising, which promised to improve your life. Rosso says he is a big fan of irony and the Be Stupid campaign is only the latest in a series of advertising campaigns that have pushed the envelope. “At that time, all the advertising looked same. Our campaign came as a shock to everyone,” he says.

The US market was unexplored territory then. So is India now. Although there are many Diesel loyalists in the country, buying their perfect fit while travelling abroad, premium denim is still an alien concept for most. How can he justify a price tag of $500 for something that’s available to the Indian consumer at $50? “If you bring 10 different jeans from different brands right now I can show you so many detailing Diesel has that others won’t. You will continue to discover them many months after buying them,” he says.

He lifts his shirt to show me the double belt loops, one each for a big and small belt, and then points to droplets of white paint, a detailing done by hand. “The finishing inside, the kind of treatment that goes into making a pair, every piece is different. We have special machines to do our hip. It is not straight but like this,” he says, making a half-moon in the air with his finger. “It’s difficult because you have to train people to work in a different sort of way. It gives you more volume and the butt is…”—he explains the rest with his hand gestures.

Rosso and Mehta hope to open seven stores in India this year and 22 within five years.

Over 30 years have passed since the brand was launched, but Rosso and Diesel continue to remain relevant to their target market—the youth. He says his biggest strength as a businessman is innovation.

“Stupid sees things as they can be and not as they are,” says a poster from the Be Stupid campaign. Rosso says he could get ideas from anywhere. “When I am on the Web, when I am talking to you, could be in the restaurant, in the disco, in the street, anywhere. I take pictures and I read 200 magazines from all over the world,” he says.

He makes sure that he and his employees have a lot of fun. Rosso divides his free time between his farm, playing football and doing yoga. “I go to pubs, disco, drink, enjoy and in other free time, I am also making sex. I am very social, no?” he says, laughing. He has six children with his ex-wife and lives in Bassano del Grappa in Italy. He has people who have taken over the finance and logistics of running the company, leaving Rosso free to work in the creative space.

For someone advocating being stupid, what is the stupidest thing he has done? “So many. First, to have a name like Diesel. Now it’s cool, but in the beginning, for a clothing line to be called that, was not. To decide to enter the US market. And to decide to make all Diesel stores different. It’s easy to make it same like a chain, but this is my way to run business,” he says

Weekly Facebook fashion index: Diesel tops most popular jeans brands

Two months after the marketing company Stylophane first set up its Facebook fashion index, the ranking for jeans brands has almost entirely changed.

Diesel, which thanks to its much-talked-about Be Stupid campaign counts more than 400,000 fans, has been added to the index and now tops the list, followed by Levi's, Guess, and DKNY. Brands targeting younger customers such as Miss Sixty, Pepe, and Miss Me, follow suit.

Labels specializing in designer denim, such as 7 for All Mankind or Hudson are still far behind with figures below 10,000.

Here is the top ten of most-followed jeans brands, based on the company's so-called FBI:

Taking a closer look

Last Saturday i took the afternoon of to send some documents and most importantly, settle the remaining 10% of the purchase price, leaving me very much in the poor house for the rest of the month huhu… :(. But I figured its better to paying up now while I still have sufficient necessary funds. With soo many temptations around, both in town and online, you would never now what I might have splurged on! I guess that from now on, financial discipline is of the utmost importance: not one of my best attributes though, sigh.

Anyhow, with that out of the way I am now ready for the next stage of the house buying process i.e. the signing of that ever important Sales & Purchase Agreement (SPA). The developer indicated that it would be ready by mid-May the earliest. So, if all goes according to plan, I can then proceed to apply the staff loan to settle the balance of the house price. Wish me luck guys…

Of course while I was there, naturally I visited the Astana Lumayan show house for the nth time, just to have a glimpse of what my dream home would look like come 2013. However, this time I have managed to take some sneak pics, before the pesky guard reprimanded us (‘tak boley ambik gambar ye encik’ katanya). There comes a stage in ones life where he or she embarks on a decision or event that will forever alter their course in life from then onwards. Be it pursuing further studies, career advancement, purchasing their first property or car, falling in and out of love, getting married or having kids: all are rights of passages in the journey that is life.

I have the great privilege of witnessing firsthand the advancement of people close to me, my family and friends. And I am genuinely happy for each and everyone of them (in some cases, with a little sprinkling of jealousy, hehe). As with any life altering decisions, they are more often not easy, come are fraught with more complications and sacrifices than perhaps the individual had bargained for. But, after sowing the seeds, nurturing and caring, the fruits that they enjoy at the end of it all, has been worth it.

I had aimed to pursue my studies a while ago, but alas that is not in the cards for me for the time being. I have also entertained the prospect of carrier advancement: While that requires not only the determination, drive and self-confidence which somehow I am lacking at the moment, but also the belief that people around me realise and acknowledges the potential that I have. As for falling in love? Well that requires a whole blog entry (or several) in itself, hehe…

So at the ‘ripe’ ol age of 30, what does one do to show (to himself more than anyone else), that every turn and twist leading up to this moment had not amounted to nothing?

In my case, If there is that one thing that I promised myself to undertake is buying my own house, my own place to proudly call my own.

Even that took much procrastination on my part, until of course the fateful Eureka moment when my parents informed me that my siblings will be moving into their apartment that I ‘took care of’ on my own all this while (7 years to be exact). So much for epiphanies, hehehe…

So after searching around, researching and some inner soul-researching, I finally took the plunge last Saturday and embarked on the journey (or should I say adventure) that will hopefully lead me to my dream abode. Thus, it is with great pleasure that I to introduce to you my ASTANA LUMAYAN.

Nestled within the established and pristine Tasik Permaisuri and Bandar Tun Razak cul-de-sac, this condominium promises a ‘lake park living’ lifestyle in Kuala Lumpur. Befitting its lush natural surroundings, the condominium employs state of the art green technology for a truly sustainable and responsible standard of living. I haven't been reviewing Malaysian music for a while. And who can blame me, given the dearth of new (and worthwhile) releases of late… its a sad predicament of the local music scene. So it is with great pleasure that I start the first review of the year with Faizal Tahir’s sophomore record: ADRENALIN.

It must have been a daunting task trying to top the irresistible debut that is AKU.MUZIK.KAMU, the winner of the AIM Album of the year in 2008 as well as home to many chart topping hits. That was very much in the minds of Faizal Tahir and Audi Mok when approaching the follow-up. But, rather that treading down the tried and tested path, the dynamic duo had wisely opted to experiment a bit this time around, expanding their creative horizon’s with some surprising results.

Opening this tight record (only 8 original tracks in all) is the confident, Coldplay-esque ADRENALIN. Then things get rockin’ in SUPERHERO, the most ‘definitive’ Faizal Tahir track in the set. Then there is the stunning first single BENCINTA, with that Queen- inspired beat. Still sounds refreshingly groundbreaking after almost a year after its release. I am hoping that this track wins song of the year during this year’s AIM awards.

But things turn dark and gloomy with KARMA, representing a dramatic departure in terms of song writing and arrangement for the team. For those with a discernable ear might notice some backing vocals courtesy of Siti Nurhaliza backing vocals in there. Representing a complete turnabout, the ruckus MUZIK is of-kilter crazy in a good kinda way. The song cheekily showcases the duo wicked sense of humour and not taking everything at face value. Like the song’s Queen-esque chorus asks: Kenapa terlalu serius? Dengarlah muzik!

Rock ballads are still featured, and SELAMAT MALAM, the second single does a great job in building in on the emotions without ever being too schmaltzy. But if there is one song that is destined to be a knockout anthem is the sublime, emotionally wrought HANYUT, easily my favourite track on the album. It starts of with Faizal’s singing a capella and then slowly layering in the orchestrations. And that bridge, perhaps one of the best I heard in a Malay song, is simply ah-may-zing! For those wanting a more romantic groove, there is also a acoustic version of the song, showcasing Faizal’s earnest vocals to great effect. And as a thank you tribute to his fans, the album closes with SEMESTA, but what it makes it unique is the hidden reprise. Presented in an ‘and the band played on’ sorta way, the reprise builds on the song, with a hint of influences such as Alanis, Guns N Roses and even Prince cleverly interspersed in there.

All in all, this is a strong collection of songs showcasing the next stage of evolution of Faizal Tahir’s innovative and highly listenable brand of rock music. but, the big question is: can this album repeat the debut’s performance at the AIM awards this year? We will have to wait and see. But there is no question that Faizal and Audi had definitely deliver the goods: no sophomore slump here…

A new colour and the second-generation 1.3 Multijet engine make their debut on the Fiat 500 by Diesel

The Fiat 500 by Diesel has chosen "Bread & Butter", the show dedicated to youth fashion in Berlin, to preview of two important new features: "Midnight indigo" blue, a special body colour, and the 1.3 Multijet II 95 HP (Euro 5) with Start&Stop system fitted as standard, the new second-generation turbodiesel, now even more environmentally-friendly and suitable for city driving.

The result of close collaboration between Fiat and Diesel, the famous clothing brand by Renzo Rosso, the model will be limited edition and marketed worldwide. Its success is boundless and from Italy to Japan, to France, almost 6 thousand cars have already been ordered out of the 10 thousand available in total.

In Berlin, within "Bread & Butter", the Diesel stand and the exclusive Fiat 500 will no doubt attract the attention of the visitors, just as they did at the recent Mumbai Motor Show, India. Spanning a surface area of 700 square metres in the Denim Base section, the Italian label will present its 2010 autumn/winter collections and the new "shop-in-shop/corner" concept, conceived as a genuine stage to present and convey the values of the brand and all its creativity even within multi-brand stores. Features which can also be found in the new Fiat 500 by Diesel.

As regards the new colour, the Centro Stile Fiat (Fiat Style Centre) worked once more with the creative team at Diesel to create a dark blue which recalls the denim used to make jeans. The use of a micaceous rather than a metallic shade offers at first glance the feeling of iridescent colour which varies according to the light, very similar to stone washed fabrics. And this thanks to a finer texture of paint and its ability to create an almost 3-D effect. This new blue also, like the black and green already in the range, perfectly matches the matt paint chosen for the finishes which characterise this model.

The 500 by Diesel is distinguished by some bold aesthetic features, starting with the exterior. Everything is exclusive for this version, the result of the creativity of two teams of designers: the aggressive 16″ alloy wheels, the rear trim with imitation air intake where one of the most famous logos of Italian fashion is set, the yellow brake calipers (only on the 1.4 100 HP version) and the satin chrome painted features, including the mouldings which, with their bosses, revoke the atmosphere of the Diesel fashion world.

The interiors are also highly customised, thanks to the dark denim style fabric with yellow stitching, the fifth pocket with the unmistakable Diesel brand, the head of the famous Mohican on the gear lever knob and the specific satin chrome coloured dashboard.
The range of engines, in addition to the 1.3 Multijet 95 HP mentioned above, includes three Euro 5 power units (the 1.2 69 HP engine, the 1.3 Multijet 75 HP engine with DPF and the 1.4 16v 100 HP engine), each with their own different qualities, all exploited to the full in combination with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes (petrol engines can be combined with a 5-speed Dualogic robotised sequential gear box).

NEW YORK, February 16, 2010: The gridlocked mass of people at the check-in desk hinted that things were business as usual at the Diesel Black Gold show, but the debut collection by its new creative director, Sophia Kokosalaki, was anything but.

"I wanted to infuse technique into the clothes," she said backstage, "but still have them maintain that rock 'n' roll soul inherent to the brand."

While past seasons have leaned heavily toward complicated, overly distressed garments, Kokosalaki's approach was much cleaner and more focused. There was black leather—skinny trousers, sexy little dresses, sleek moto jackets—paired mostly with faded denim shirts and vests. High-end touches could be found in the stitched-up seams and patchworked layers ("I approached the denim like it was yarn," the designer said). With the exception of a one-shouldered velvet jumpsuit that didn't quite mesh with the otherwise tomboyish offerings—even the sexy body-cons that closed the show had more swagger than sweetness—it was a solid effort that will ensure the brand stays on the radar of the many top editors and retailers who made it through the crush.
